A paidagogos was indeed a slave who led boys to school and back, but also taught them etiquette and tutored them after school. Greek agogos means “master”. Pedagogue in time came to mean literally “teacher;” today the term has an old-fashioned ring to it, so it mostly means a dull, stuffy teacher. The term pedagogy, however, is still commonly used, and mostly simply means “teaching.” So it’s pedagogical preparation what is earned by someone majoring in education.
“The teaching approach and practise, especially as a school study or mathematical principle”.
